Happy Belated 4th of July
Salute

It’s hard to believe almost a week has gone by and at one moment in
time I am on the beaches of Waikiki and then walking out the very front
door of my house in California the following morning.
Nevertheless, time always seem to fly by when you’re having fun!
The beaches in Oahu beaches are truly something else. The water
is perfect, the sky is just gorgeous blue, the weather is about the
same when you wake up as it is when you fall sleep. Papaya,
pineapple, melons with brown sugar blows your taste buds away.
And there is nothing like enjoying a Pinacolada laying on the beach and
looking out into the ocean horizon! All day and all night I am
surrounded by the sound of crashing waves along the shoreline and I’m
missing that already! Sand between my toes and the sensation of
breaking waves on the shoreline on your feet! Some might call it
paradise, some might call it heaven but I wonder what native people
might call this beautiful island.

Something tells me they don’t quite see it the way we might see
it. Our experience when we first get on the island is pure awe
and aww its so beautiful. I think a lot of native people of the
island vast and hardly take for granted the beauty of God’s creation
but at the same time when I walk around and go to places and see
workers and service people catering to all these people from all over
the world I can’t help to think are these people really happy?
I’m almost positive that most people who visit the island are for the
most party happy! It’s not everyday are we able to wake up to such
glorious scenery and almost perfect weather. People flood the
streets of Honolulu with places to shop and eat like in a small
vicinity than most I’ve seen before. I talk to one of the
waitresses that served my sister and I every morning for breakfast and
I asked her how long have you worked here at the Halekulani and she
told me 20 years with a positive attitude. Out of most people
I’ve run into, the people here are a lot kinder than people from say
California. I’ve never had people in the service industry be so
assertive and at tentative to my needs or interests in places I
go. Especially people in retail. People in retail in
California are in my opinion somewhat rude but hardly encountered that
here in Oahu! It’s funny because I honestly think peoples views
of job are totally skewed from perspective according to different
regions. The jobs in Oahu and California are definitely different
in terms of demand. Oahu floods with service and sale oriented
jobs and that’s all I seem to see. Where as California, yes there
are service and sales jobs and much much more but to what’s visible to
the public and from a first impression the contrast between job
professions is pretty different. Beautiful city but gosh its
crowded especially during the 4th of July.
On a side note, I was also reading in the USA Today about How Americans
see Americans. I thought that was a very interesting title
and I came across some interesting facts. USA Today Gallup Poll
gives some stats on Attitude shift for Americans in the past 5
years. According to statistics, Americans are 68% more
materialistic, 58% less supportive of decisions by the US Govt., 48%
are less tolerant of others points of views, 46% show lower degree of
personal responsibility and 36% had stronger religious beliefs.
It’s interesting to see where American falls in 2006. Wonder what is to become of us 5 year down the road?
