  • Early Bloomer

Id like to briefly thank everyone for their helpful suggestions, links to resources and support on my journey as a photographer.  To update you all on my decision, I still haven’t reached a verdict yet but I’m thinking of keeping Stephen Anthony Photography as a whole.  My last name is just not as smooth or relaxing as my middle name is.  I’ve spent countless hours thinking about a name for my work and so far nothing comes up.  So I’m going to continue to wait and think on this more but so far I’ve gotten positive feedbacks about the name I am using now.  Most say it has a nice ring to it and I think so too.  I have been wanting to set myself apart from other photographers with my own style and own name but I am definitely had some trouble thinking of a name and logo.  Most of the creative names I have thought of are taken or don’t seem to match my work or how I want to be presented.  I thought about my last name and it’s not flying too well.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my last name and wouldn’t trade it for any other because it’s the only last name I can think of that has NO VOWELS in it at all.  Now how that for a last name eh?   nudge nudge! haha  I like the idea of tagging my photos of my full name with dashes on it.  I haven’t seen anyone do that yet and I honestly think it adds a little finesse to the photo haha!  It’s not extremely creative or anything and its definitely not a logo but its simple and it works.  And I am happy with that.

So I have another interview coming up next Tuesday and I hope I do well for this interview because it’s a actual reputable position and job.  I wont say what position it is or where because I know I’ll probably get criticized for it but thats ok.  hahah!  Lets just say I presume a watchdog type position to sustain the Integrity of people, which I happen to find very important.  Anyways, pray for the best and I’m really trying to have a Godly perspective on this and I’m praying if this is a window of opportunity that He would open this door for me.  If not I also want to accept the fact that it’s a great experience and to know He has greater plans for me.  It’s not all God because you can’t expect God to do his part if you don’t do your part.  Thats the way I see it and it’s pretty black and white.  Laziness doesn’t get you anywhere.  I’ll be studying each day to gain more background knowledge but sometimes I wonder if I should be worried about how much I know or more of how to present myself better.  I was reading once that people spend countless hours preparing for something but not enough time rehearsing over it.  Perhaps its true but I still have a lot to learn.  I guess what I’m getting here is I want to be able to present myself in a way where I want them to know I am teachable, willing to learn and expand my horizon; even if I’m not fully qualified or the most ideal candidate.  Granted that I do qualify its the experience that I don’t exactly have under my belt.  It’s probably been one of my greater weaknesses now but never the less I’m going to give it my best shot.

Yay, towards the end of next week I’ll be in Indianapolis for a good friend of mine’s wedding.  Well, I’m actually in it but I am very much excited and can’t wait to visit that state since I’ve never set foot there.  For me its such a random state to go to but never the less I hope for a awesome experience and perhaps for some decent weather that wont chill my bones.

What a simple way to market yourself well for a starting photographer?  I know knowing people and basically word of mouth is probably one of the most efficient ways as a starting photographer but what else has proven effective?  Someone said Craiglist.com is somewhat legit.  What do you guys think?  Oh I do probably want to screen my quality in terms of the types of photography I would be interested in.

    Cheers, Steve

  • :sunny: beautiful photo. good luck!

  • Best of luck I know you will succeed. Great photo as well. I feel your pain with having a hard time coming up with a logo and name that isn’t taken.

  • I forgot to comment about your parting question. The best way to get started marketing yourself as a pro is to find your niche and your market first. Decide who you are, what you shoot, what your style is and then find out WHO fits that client profile. Once you have your market – then you can start marketing.

  • i agree with natelam’s advice! as for seeking out jobs here and there, craigslist is good. photogs are often looking for second shooters, and that’s a great way to gain experience and build your portfolio.

  • stephen anthony photography!!!!!!!!!!!
    blessings to you steve.
    =)

  • wow. it’s such a strong photograph. AWESOME!
i know everything is gonna turn out right.
just set your mind to it mister!

  • modelmayhem.com and onemodelplace.com

they would be good to practice with working with strangers and developing skills on making connections with models…. careful though cuz theres also alot of “trash” there…u can also see the portfolios of other starters vs pros and compare their image quality with yours… i personally like onemodelplace more than modelmayhem because you need to pay to have a membership vs free modelmayhem…

ive tried both but i dont feel as if im at the level where i can market myself yet… perhaps in 5 yrs or so….

  • have fun at the wedding. and good luck on the interview. also i think you should be named N.G. PHOTOGRAPHY haha

  • omg! it is sooooooo cold here i’m jealous!

  • yea im going for a sigma 70-200mm f2.8. the higher price of the canon just doesnt make sense to me unless i want a white lens with a higher resale value. optics on the siggy are comparable so im going to save $300 and perhaps put that money towards a 24-105L.

good luck on your job finding dude! just remember you were created for nothing less than glorifying God in every small thing you do.

  • Love the contrast and softness of the photo.

  • how did you get that glow and softness? did you use picasa or photoshop?

see you in a few weeks bro!

  • thanks for the support stephen!! and btw, your photos are awesome. they get better each time i come to your site. and like I said, I’m so glad you forgot to give kevin my cookbook back…because then we ended up meeting, and you came to my graduation and took those lovely pictures!!!!! =D
hopefully i’ll get to see you sometime in the future!!!!

  • nice flower & all the best for your job interview next tuesday! :goodjob:

  • i think your last name is unique and is kind of a label… stephen and anthony are more common, but sound good and are easily recognizable. it is a tough call. whatever you pick, you will do well and your clients will develop name recognition with you.

    btw: this image is superb!

  • You need to go with a logo that fits you best, personal I liked the [SA] Photography the best, then your last name, then your first and middle.  I think the first two set you apart from other photographers.  Many use their names and your first and middle are pretty common.  Of course, it really depends on what type of client you are going for! Good luck and best wishes on your interview!!!

  • God Bless:heartbeat:

  • Yeah, I’m asking myself that same marketing question right now. How to book weddings on a regular basis, and how to break into the clientele of couples to whom $5,000 is spare change instead of an impossible amount. Talking to Scott Robert has done the most for me so far, and I’m going to continue that pursuit. Networking with other photographers is I’m sure a key tool.

Craigslist I’m not sure about. You may be able to get business but like you hint, it may not be the kind of business you want to get. I get the impression that dirt poor people like me are the ones using craigslist, because hey, my girlfriend uses it all the time!

Good luck and thanks for commenting on my “introductory post” too,
    -Matt-

  • i still think their POOP :whocares:

  • keep up the awesome work! i really don’t know anything about photography/career thing so i can’t help you there. i think any of those names work, but i like stephen anthony cuz it has a nice classy ring to it. also, this may be completely useless but i think even through myspace you can start to put your name and your work out there. i’ve had a few photographers requesting to add me. their profile names were something-photography. i thought it was completely random but i was curious (they’d post one of their works as their profile pic) and i actually went to their sites and took the time to look at their photos. it was pretty cool. and you know how myspace works. people like to check out random ppl’s sites based on their profile pics. plus u can read the comments posted and see what other people think of the photography/-er.  not sure how helpful that is to u and i guess it also depends on what type of clients u want to attract. haha..and with myspace, you will find some interesting ppl out there.

  • a name sets up a lot of things…
have you considered going with not your name?

RYC: please do … mm what?

  • yeh i thought about that.. setting things on fires is sorta normal, but i guess setting THINGS on fire and setting fires are two different things..i think

but anywhooo.. so photography ay? good stuff there :]
im glad you’re doin somethin you enjoy!!

  • i like stephen anthony photography! i told ya….it sounds strong!

  • hey stephen anthony, you big copy cat!!! haahahaaha. it does sound nice though. You know i’m going to rub it in everytime I see you!! Don’t worry, I’ll go easy after 5 years. Hey, good question on how to get started. We will get into that at my mentoring class. I do say, the best way to learn is from people who have been doing it FULL TIME and who are extremely successful. When I started, I had no idea what type of photographer I wanted to be. Sometimes you have to try different things to find out if you like it or not. Finding your niche is fine but you still need to diversify your skills and at my class I will tell you exactly why. Don’t worry in a few weeks so many things will become clear to you. If you don’t come away from my class inspired, on fire, and with a clear direction,  I’ll hang up my photography career and I’ll let Stephen Anthony reign!!!

  • hey steve, I recommend you read:
