  • 32 People Is Never Justified
Warning: sensitive content (if you intend on reading please read it carefully or else you could misunderstand me)

“I saw bullets hit people’s body,” Sheehan was quoted as saying. “There was blood everywhere. People in the class were passed out, I don’t know maybe from shock from the pain. But I was one of only four that made it out of that classroom. The rest were dead or injured.”

Since when was killing 32 people justified?  Or how about even 1?  Even the mere thought of killing someone shouldn’t be a justified act.  For the past 2 days America has suffered the loss of terrific, talented, gifted people all at the hand of a mad mans rage against social standards, economics differences and what…a whole list of other factors investigators and people will conclude to.  It has not only directly affected the families and friends of Virginia Tech but the rest of American suffers the pain and sorrow.  I share this pain with all of you at VT! My heart hurts for the victims, victims families and so on.  I am all the way on the west coast and yet this incident hits me so hard I almost sit here teary eyed processing what it was like being in the dorms at 7am hearing gun fire or the students who’s lives were taken in a place where violence should never happen or the students who barricaded the door so the killer could not enter or how about the students pouring out of the window of the second floor for their lives.  O my heart cries at such a catastrophe.

What is more upsetting too is that I HATE the fact that the guy was Asian.  Particularly South Korean.  But an American still!  A guy like this makes for a bad name for the Asian community not only in Virginia but it affects the Asian community as a whole around the nation.  Some of you might not agree and thats fine but I think it does.  When any other ethnicity other than Asian views us most of the time I would say we are generally viewed as Asian and not by our specific Asian heritage.  So to the public we are not always viewed as Chinese, Korean or Japanese, Vietnamese etc; we are view as Asian just like how people don’t categorize white people into German, Irish, etc.  Yes we do of course but to the general eye of what people SEE you don’t normally say hey a Irish person.  Instead you say a white person.  Same thing goes for Asians, to people who aren’t Asian they might not view us by our specific race!  So in a general sense, this horrific incident at VT directly affects and is associated with all of us because we (or I) am Asian.  What sort of ramifications could there be?  I can’t say exactly but I could think of a few.  Perhaps any racial backfire?  Sure, its could happen!  Is it right?  NO because we live in America where we aren’t judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character!  But for many of us as humans, we know that doesn’t always hold true initially, especially if you loved one is gone!  Seriously, put yourself in a parents shoe from VT, if you ain’t Asian Id be hard pressed to say you wouldn’t initially be upset with Asians.  It’s not right but lets face some facts, history speaks numbers of what people have done to the Japanese Americans.  I’m not saying that will happen and perhaps we have learned from our mistakes but there could be some racial backfire.  I’m not saying it will happen but I present the idea!  We all know this topic has been all over the media, news radio, talk shows, news prints etc and it has spread like a wild fire across the country and other parts of the world I’m sure! Whats the truth of the matter I am not sure since we know who controls the media and who controls talk radio!  My heart is heavy with such news and as we follow the media and news to learn more of the reason why such a terrible thing has happened there almost seems like no feasible answer as to why, why why?  It’s almost senseless if you ask me!

Quotes from Youtube…(not used to support my thoughts but to show what people comment publicly)

“azns… dont mess wit dem” – anonymous

    the response…
“seriously, everyone needs to stop with putting each other down this is
about you so maybe your racist maybe your not, but honestly no one
cares, this video isn’t about racism its about a tradegy, so for once
think about something more important because everyone fighting over
their opinions doesn’t solve much does it?” – anonymous

7am 2 people are dead!  2 hours later the body count is 33 including the psycho killer along with dozens upon dozens injured!  I mean seriously throw aside what you have heard these past couple of days as ask yourself what the hell is up here?  ItS evil at its best work!  What bedazzles me even more is that there have been previous bomb warnings on campus prior to the shootings and whats up NOT evacuating, canceling or warning students about what had happened at 7am.  I mean 2 people were shot and presumed dead at that time and yet 2 hours later people are dying due to lost of communication or lack or awareness!  At 9am there were still students in class rooms, wtf?  They should not have been in class period!  What went wrong?  Why wasn’t the campus alerted right away?  I know you’ve heard these questions over and over and you’ve probably thought about them yourselves.  There could of been so much that could of been done to prevent or limit such a catastrophe.  Thats another thought…Americans are always so REACTIVE!  We are almost NEVER PROACTIVE!  We only respond to what has already happened and we hardly do things to prevent things from happening!  Yeah you might say well how would you know something like this would happen?  Well, I’ll tell you…remember what 7 or 8 years ago…Columbine?  That enough evidence of a previous massacre to be more proactive!  Now we’ve got the largest Massacre in the history of America.  I hate to be so negative here and it’s truly not a reflection of myself at all but I guess I am frustrated and heart broken like many other Americans!

From what I’ve read and listened to VT and Blacksburg is a relatively family oriented and learning more on the conservative side yet in the letters and threats from the killer stating things that “you brought this on yourself” is a truly a sign of mental disorder.  I mean the guy was diagnosed with depression and had been on medication.  He wrote a play that was so disturbing that he was reported to the schools advisory and I believe he had even seeked counseling for issues!  The kid was clearly a loaner, didn’t have many friends and was said to be the type who would wear glasses indoor or even dark days which doesn’t necessarily justify a killer but a lot of these things are not unfamiliar to us! These characteristics are obviously abnormal.  The killer according to sources hated rich kids, people who were more well off, maybe had a better life than he did from a economic stand point or whatever the reason was but it just doesn’t add up to why still?  Looking at the demographics of VT and what the general region emphasizes its not like he’s around an environment from Beverly Hills 90210 where people live a more flashy life and where peoples life styles are distinctly notable!

America cries today but the spirit prevails through such a tragedy.  My prayers and condolences to the victims and the victims families and friends of VTU.  As a nation we unite through our sufferings and go on never forgetting the ones we lost along the way.  We stand strong together and my prayer is that we don’t push away from each other but to embrace the value of life!  To Virginia Tech…may peace and a place of learning once again coincide with one another.

Profiles of victims in Virginia Tech massacre
    It’s a long profile list! =(

    Comments & Thoughts Welcomed!

I apologize in advance if this has offended you in anyway, BUT it is a free country! =)
In no way do I promote racial profiling in the voice of this post!  I love all my brothers and sisters of all race, backgrounds, social and economic backgrounds etc.  In no way do I attempt to demean or demoralize any such race or ethnicity!

It’s not about me? or if you’re Asian living in America!  And it shouldn’t be is what I am saying ultimately!  It’s not about race or ethnicity I know.  It’s about a horrible tragedy and remembering the loved ones we lost! I hope among a dark hour that LIGHT will shine again and something good will come from all this destruction!

    Thanks for reading,
    Steve

  • Amen brother! I couldn’t have said it better myself!

  • True very true. Thanks for posting this bro

    Daniel

  • its really shocking!

  • it had nothing to do with his race. i realize some people would judge the entire event differently based on any particular race… asian, black, hispanic, white. they all have different perceptions to different people, but it was 1 human being with serious trouble in his heart and in his mind.

take 1 disturbed individual and put a violent video game in their hands and it creates a tragedy of this proportion. we need to realize that standing for our right to do as we want, consume what we want isn’t always the best thing, and we need to stop allowing vendors to create and market video games and music of a violent nature.

what will it take? it is the almighty dollar that wins every time. my motto: good in – good out, garbage in – garbage out. all of these violent games are causing great damage to our young minds. they desensitise them to violence and they can no longer separate one world from the other.
i truly hope this issue is raised in this tragedy and maybe some good can come of it.

  • Do you really believe further segregation into what part of Asia an Asian American is from is going to help reduce racism against Asians?
Don’t be duped by the media to believe that he was South Korean.  He was born there.  But he was American, and I say that with good reason.  My most recent entry has a few lines in there.  And I would be saying the same things were I Chinese American, Vietnamese American, etc.  Even if I were White or Black or Brown.

  • Robin: I am not saying that this has anything to do with race because it doesn’t! The fact that this could have backfire on specific groups could be a possibility! Thats all I am saying! Yah it was one human being but I am pressed to rise sensetive questions about the matter. People don’t like to talk about race too often because its a sensitive topic and I wont go into all of this but one persons wrong doing can affect a race and perhaps it may not. Ask people who have been ridiculed or judged after the attack on 9/11, its WRONG I know. I have a couple people who have told me their personal experiences who happen to be Palestinian or are of Middle Eastern descent. Yah 9/11 was different than what happened at VT but the concept of the matter is still there!

In regards to video games…i too believe they can have a negative influence on people or children these days but then again Id like to do more research on that mattter!

  • JiLOV3: I’m not sure what your first question is asking. I’m not sure if your understanding me right here. Im not looking at segregation of Asian Americans…its not my intentions and when has segregation reduced racism? I don’t think it does! Yet, that still exsists if you want to believe it or not! Not saying I condone that or even participate in that in anyway or form because my family is extremely diverse. I think segregation creates more judgment possible misunderstanding! Yah, you know I’ve read that somewhere but I guess I wasn’t sure exactly what the truth of the mans identity was. Thanks for the comment!

  • my friend and i were talking about this last night…about the potential hate crimes that could arise from this incident, and that WILL probably arise in due time.  it’s definitely not right, but history has a record for racial backfire . . .

and exactly. in that 2 hrs, why weren’t students more well informed about the two shootings in the dorm?  why were they in class?  why weren’t they evacuated?  what in the hell were the authorities doing?  32 dead . . . where were the law enforcements and how come the psycho wasn’t stopped?

also, a lot of these people in this world have depression…are bipolar or what not…but it doesn’t mean that they are going to go on a shooting rampage.  so how do you tell the difference between those that will and will not “lose it”?

  • its a super sad story…

  • I read his play Richard McBeef… and there’s nothing disturbing about it. It’s horribly written and the only reason (I’m guessing) people find it “disturbing” is because it doesn’t conform to the normal happy bullshit works his peers were writing. Plenty of my peers wrote truly disturbing stories for our senior English project and I haven’t heard of any of them killing people, yet.

This guy is most likely just stupid… not disturbed. Stupid enough to resort to shooting and killing to solve problems. Stupid enough to only kill 32 people in a building with ten to twenty times that number with TWO guns and plenty of ammo. Though of course I’m not saying he should have killed more… he just does not have the mental capacity to think through his actions.

Or… he’s just has issues. :wha:

  • though after reading http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18175525/ … maybe he was just disturbed

  • I definantly agree… You should never go to the lengths to kill period. Eh, there’s always going to be racism. You can’t do anything about it.

  • Stephen, I totally agree. It kills me when things like this happen. I can hardly even think about seeing someone get shot, let alone think about me being the person pulling the trigger… *shakes head…*

RE – the majority of Tim’s shooters on Saturday were actually Canon. The three Nikon shooters didn’t want to feel left out though, and that’s why I showed up to help them out. The Nikon system is very powerful, and with flash it can even be considered superior to Canon. Not astronomically on a pro level, but definitely for basic, amateur / advanced amateur stuff…

Although on a related note, by and large on Saturday, and at the Renaissance Fair on Sunday, I was surprised to see a LOT more Nikon D80′s and D50′s than there were Canon digital rebels and 20D / 30D’s! But that’s another musing for another post for another time, …and another blog! (CameraTalk )

As for CS3, RAW and my Mac- I’m loving it.. No speed complaints, once it gets up and running. It takes a while to create the high-quality thumbnails, and I think Lightroom might be faster at that, but once running smoothly, it runs quick.

    Take care,
    -Matt-

  • Visualfusion: yah hes distrubed, is mentally ill! hes not stupid because he obviously studied English as a major and premeditated the whole event! so in my book the man isn’t stupid. he a corrupt individual who didn’t recieve enough love from his parents, his parents probably didn’t teach him and spend time with him and id go as far to saying they probably cared less about his thoughts and person problems but rather pushed that off to the side and were content that he went to school. if one thing people ignore is that there are a number of asian american kids who grow up in household where parents don’t spend time with their kids, they dont mentour them, where the parents doesn’t even become a mentor for their life and welling but rather just a being that sends them to school, feeds them, gives them what they need and thats about it. not all households are like that of course but there are some and for some psychos are not always a outcome like cho! this dude was just illed and there is nothing that justifies his actions. i mean damn the guy sent a video and pictures of him to show himself after he knew his life would be gone after that day. this guy is a cold blooded killer and if i wasn’t so nice id almost want the guy to burn in hell!

  • Totally with you on the asian thing. oh steve.

  • This guy had serious mental derangements. Not stupid.  I wonder, like you, what his family life was truly like.  Sounds like not much.  When I was in high school, I know of several Korean students who are sent over to the US for schooling and are basically left parentless.  Pretty scary.  By the way, I’m sure this is not just a “Korean” or an “Asian” phenomena.  I think the US is still viewed as the land of opportunities and some parents will do just about everything to give their children that chance – but at what price?  Terrible.  Terrible.

  • I just spent the last 30 min reading this and the profiles of the victims you linked to. I havent been watching or hearing anything since the tragedy so I am glad you linked the profiles. It is so heartbreaking that the human race has to be filled with the capacity to sin and that it has no end to the evil that can be comjured up. I know that we all know it is out there but until it raises its ugly head to this degree we cant or dont get outraged. But it happens in small degrees everyday everywhere in the world. But we cant and dont  have the ability to be outraged by them all. So we release all those pent up frustrations when we see something that is this horrific. It is ugly and it is a damned part of civilization. I guess it wont get any better as time goes on either. I have one thing that keeps me from alowing this to take over my every thought for our kids and grandkids and that is that we have hope. Jesus is the one who came to pay the ultimate price to set us free. Not only in this life but in the eternal life we all will live when we finish out our time here. I only wish that this sick young man had been filled the knowlegdge of who could have been his Savior. But he took things into his own hands and crushed so many lives by taking so many wonderful people!

Thanks Steve for having such a great heart to post this…I pray that we have come miles and miles away from condemning people and their whole race and culture based on one or the few.

    God bless those hurting people!!!

    Kerri

  • Steve, in your response to visualfusion you speculated about his family environment. I also, like you, can’t help but think his family life was messed up and that he didn’t have much parental direction except for the prime directive to excel in school…that’s all.

  • this world is getting sicker as the days go by. God’s innocent people have been slained by a lifeless human being (if I could even say so) and the world is getting darker every minute. This is not justified. I am in grievance for the family of all the victims especially the parents of the murderer. I am still in shock and I can’t stop but imagine what happened that day and how many young people’s lives were ending at that very moment because of one person. I am deeply saddened and I am grateful to have such a close connection with my family through God.

  • i agree man. its a sad sad world that we live in. i was totally gonna take pictures of my bathtub but it was toooo nasty! …and this was over in saratoga west, so so nasty!
