  • Living In Your Sweet Spot

“Don’t worry about skills you don’t have.  Don’t covet strengths others do have.” – Max Lucado
“Just extract your uniqueness.  Kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you.” – 2 Timothy 1:6
And do so to…make a big deal out of God.

Still searching for you sweet spot in life?  Looking to live a extraordinary life?  Looking for a Cure from the Common Life?  Well…I am!  I’m sure most of you would jump on this band wagon without a seconds notice but how many of us jump out along the way?  Id be hard pressed to say most of us do because we are uncertain, things don’t go the way we expect them to go or maybe what we’re doing is simply going no where? Perhaps many of us haven’t even hop on board.  In any case, I would encourage you to stay on/hop on and Seek Living in YOUR sweet spot in life.  I haven’t quite arrive there yet but I hope to one day.  Learning to live in my sweet spot doesn’t come by doing what it is I love or do best.  It’s not having the perfect job, it’s not making tons of money, obtaining prestigious educations or any other sort of thing many of us hold in high esteem.  Learning to live in my sweet spot comes through learning to follow God’s lead for my life.  As cliche as that sounds, my life doesn’t make sense without God in the drivers seat.  Take away everything tangible that we own or obtain and ask yourself what would be left?  For me…I want to be certain it is My Only Hope!  My will power wont be enough to get me to the end because I am merely a man.  If I’m ever to become successful in what I do…God needs to be at the center.  Strangely, I feel like I always have to relearn this because I am easily discredit God and quickly give myself the trophy!  I once heard that “If you love something/someone so much you would be willing to let it go and if its meant to be that love will come back to you.”  – unknown   Read Max Lucado’s Cure for the Common Life.

So what’s an extraordinary life look like?  I believe a extraordinary life is lived in faith.  If a extraordinary life was so easily obtainable everyone would be on the path and that wouldn’t make it extraordinary now would it?  “Take the road less taken and Trust God will come through for you…and He always does.  It might not be what you want or expect but in turn its all a part of living a extra ordinary life.

So this weekend I went to DKC (Davis Korean Church) and it seems pretty awesome.  The church seems fairly young with some pretty cool people around my age group.  I felt very welcomed here and will be back.  =)  I think one of the hardest parts for me in terms of finding a church is connecting with people you have some common grounds with.  I’ve been struggling a lot with my walk because I’ve been out of community for almost a year now and my walk with God has suffered.  I don’t spend nearly enough time praying and meditating on scripture as I should.  Why?  I think I am honestly a lazy Christian and I hope to change that more.  I have definitely learned many things through this struggle and its funny because I already know this but its funny how I have to be continually reminded constantly.  We are all really bad listeners!

    1. You cannot make it without community!
    2. Accountability is important
    3.  You have to make the move, community wont come to you…you need to go to it and plug yourself in.
    4.  Don’t be afraid!

Time to get plugged in! =)

    Thanks for reading

    Cheers,
    Steve

  • I am bad… I always forget about my god given talents and always forget to thank him.  Well, thank you for reminding me and making me realize that I am blessed for the talen that God has given me :)

  • Oh and btw, love the last photo!

  • AW I know what you mean about community! I missed it so much when I was in Italy and now that I’m graduating, it’s kind of scary to think of looking for a whole new community again.

  • Wow, your 4 concluding points are just the things I’ve been trying to share with my 19 yr old daughter..please pray Bri will learn these things too..

  • good post!  I totally agree with your 4 points.  I also think its important to find a community that’s in the same life stage.

  • i’ve been trying to be a better christian lately too. i’ve started reading the bible, but it happens all too sporadic. it took me months just to finally get to the book of john. it’s interesting hearing four people’s experiences of what happened during those days.

by the way, that last picture is my favorite! you had to have taken a million of those shots to get that perfect angle, huh?

  • hey so you ended up getting that book i recommended? =D

  • <3 the bw photo. =)

and thanks! shooting the kids was a lot of fun. =) tiring, but fun.

  • Nice photos!  My favorite is the first…i would say the second, but the tree looks like it is comine out of her head.  Best wishes!

  • hey steve, what a small world. a pastor at dkc (daniel yoon) and i served together at a former church years ago. in fact, his wife is a former student of mine way back in my youth ministry days! please say hi to them for me.

  • steve, this is such a great post!!! you are such a wise young man and i love your search. i’m still searching for my sweet spot and i’m 40…LOL! but the older you get i do know you get closer to it everyday that is for sure as long as Christ is the center of your life. i’d love to post this on my blog and give you credit for it. i think this post is worth sharing around. let me know if that would be okay with you :)  i have posted some great news today about my son who lives in davis… come take a look!!! and as usual, your pictures are fantastic!

  • Lolxx0rz, I was up from 8am to 2pm. Quick trip. I thought you were down south for some reason!

  • Oh, drr. IVCF UC Davis. –> UC Davis <–. Drrr.

  • LOVE the last shot.  amazing!

thanks for sharing and reminding about God’s role in our loves.  2 Timothy 1:6 sums it up perfectly.

  • Thanks dude :) you take great shots too. you seem to be shooting for the love of it and i respect that… a lot of “photographers” here on xanga have seemed to lost that and charge extraneous amounts of money for something they think is just a business and not an art… keep it going!

    I shoot with a canon 1D mark II n and a 20D with a few lenses, btw

  • ryc: cool beans i get a [free?] photoshoot offer from the steve ng? haha can i save it for my birthday party? you and eric should come out when i figure out what i’m gonna do.. prolly dinner at claim jumper? come!

  • lurvely colors!

  • First…those photos are amazing!! I’m talking seriously fabulous.

Second…your words were such a blessing to me today.  I’m totally in a “lazy” mode with my walk right now and it doesn’t feel good.  I need to do something to change that.  Thanks for sharing your heart today.

  • I am glad you shared your faith over the internet!! When we pray for our relationship to be closer to God, I don’t think He gives us the fuzzy warm feelings for you to feel closer with Him.  God answers our prayer by giving us more opportunities to be closer.  ( I learned that from after watching Evan’s Almighty..hahah!)

Everyone has their “lazy” period of their faith, mine was during all 4 years of college. As I look back my college years, life during college would be so much easier and better if I allow myself to use those opportunities to be closer with Him. But I didn’t, so my collage path of faith was rough.

Anway, I like the 1st photo the most. Especially how the sun light wraps around your model.

  • great pictures!!  hey, can you come down to the South Bay on Aug 4th for a get-together i’m throwing??

  • loving the first 3 and last photo bro.

nice post… i agree with ya on that it does take community and commitment to the Lord… it is easily for us to get in our “comfort” spot in life and be content with the way things are. i know for myself i find myself in this place alot actually. however, as i set aside all the excuses and make the time to listening, reading and mediating on the word of God, He does something… really extraordinary… it’s not a feeling either although i do find myself really having true joy inside of my heart that i want leap in the air praising God. just set time out for Him, praying and reading. be also to get plugged into a church where you’ll grow. i know it’ll feel strange at first or awkward since you feel like you’re not able to connect to the people and all but hang in there… pray about it… and seek God with all of your heart. i’ll be praying for you bro.

  • Stephen, thanks for your reply, and I totally agree. In fact I don’t care HOW artistic someone is, or how good they are in photoshop- if they don’t know what to expect then you are really taking a gamble and that’s the bottom line. This is one of the main reasons that I’m simply dying to be able to afford someone like Scott Robert, because I KNOW it is a sure-fire deal. I am buying peace of mind, so to speak..

    -Matt-

  • Thanks for sharing this post. After reading your blogs and seeing your images for the past several months, I know good things will come your way. Good luck and keep up the faith.

  • Hey Stephen,

Love your post….it is true we all have a calling and a place….and God is the one who gives it to us and he empowers us…but it is all about Him isnt it?

Sometimes we make it about ourselves and we  have to keep reminding ourselves over and over that we are here to give Him glory…not ourselves…why do we forget that so easily?

It is interesting the journeys we take and how sometimes that journey can be so bizarre that you just shake your head…but in the end we realize God knew what He was doing…

BTW…is that 5th pic at the Mondavi? Those are all so beautiful!!!

    Kerri

  • Oh duh I see that it was at the Mondavi there was a sign in one of them! hahaha…..and that is a cool song on the link!

    K

  • It was a great post.  I am going through some difficulties whit where God is leading me.  So it is a good reminder.

  • Great words and even more amazing shots.

They’re going to LOVE the last one. :)

  • haha! Hey Steve, long time!
    thanks man…
    as for your post…
hummm Im happy for you that you found a church for you… I am myself looking for a church
It’s been about 2 years since my walk has declined considerably…
Hopefully I will find a church I can feel good at

  • dude your right. most people don’t have enough courage to go after their “sweet spot” or faith. it took me 39 years to find it but it was all worth it!!!!

  • Sweet pics! Love the 1st one especially!

  • happy 4th to you too!!
    it sure is hot today!!!!!

  • love everything you’ve said here and the images conjur emotion… you know just when to use b&w to make it a strong image.

  • so I guess kevin and I never told you about why we left DKC (a very awkward situation given the fact that I was both a Sunday school teacher AND a small group leader). And when I say left, I mean after finishing all my obligations and commitments, I never ever went back. Not even to visit. And no one bothered to ask me why. ~shrug~ I learned a lot about churches from that experience.
but anyway, not to dampen the mood or anything =P see you on sunday!! =D
